ARKIOI
SMALL AND DREAMED
Arkioi with its 40 Akrites inhabitants is a small island which administratively belongs to the municipality of Patmos. In the ancient times it was called Arkitis and the modern settlement (Porto - Augusta) has been built on the bay, on top of a hill were there are remains of a tower and a fortress of the 4th c.B.C. with worship activity in antiquity.
It is a dream place for visitors, but also for the locals. If you walk uphill during a full moon from the port,
high on the hill to Panagia Pantanassa, you will see the sea mirroring all around and the islands, as if they were carved by a painter. Continuing for an hour hiking at the back of the island you will discover a wonderful cave with stalactites and stalagmites that still remains unexplored. A sign indicates the way to the only beach of the island, Tiganakia, 45 minutes walk from the settlement. Half sand half pebble, is ideal for swimming.
This wonderful and hospitable little island is waiting to welcome you.
